Ben Karpinski shares some of his top sun-protection picks for this summer

You may not always know where your next shot is heading, but as golf is played outdoors, one thing you do know is that the weather will always be a factor, including the harsh South African sun.

So you naturally need a gameplan for this. For many people, protection from the sun has usually meant applying a bit of factor 40 and wearing a nice hat. Thanks to modern advancements, sun protection has stepped up a gear and can be in keeping with your style and comfort.

CLOTHING

When it comes to shielding yourself from the sun, you can’t always take for granted that every golf shirt does the job. Your best bet are modern lightweight polyester shirts that keep you cool and dry, and provide a tough layer of protection from the sun’s rays.

ADIDAS MEN’S 3-STRIPE BASIC POLO SHIRT – RED

This polo shirt made from recycled polyester to save resources also offers UPF 50+ UV protection.

ARM SLEEVES

Though still a little niche on the golf course, the UV arm sleeves hold a lot of merit in the sun-protection game. Lightweight and cooling in the heat, they present a great alternative to applying extra sunblock, and they prevent those golfer arm tans just above the elbow! The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) even has its own product, which is available here:

MINERAL SUNSCREENS

Sunscreens can be a hotly debated subject. The general off-the-shelf options are made from inexpensive synthetic chemicals. Though there is no doubting they get the job done in preventing sunburn, there are more pleasant (though more costly) mineral options to consider. The key components of zinc oxide, titanium oxide and natural ingredients protect you from the sun, while being a little kinder to your skin.

FLATDOG BODYGUARD SPF 50 MINERAL-BASED SUNSCREEN

This water-resistant formula offers high, long-lasting protection and doesn’t clog or block your pores.

HEADWEAR

The wider the brim, the greater the protection. You can’t get away from this logic so don’t be shy to look past the conventional baseball cap style when choosing headwear this summer. A classic wider brim look is always a unisex winner too.

PHOENIX PANA-MATE

This travel-friendly sun hat provides the highest grade of sun protection.

UMBRELLAS

For the purist, the umbrella normally only comes out on the course when it rains. But when you are in the sun for five-plus hours, a bit of extra shade on extremely hot days is always a good idea.
