BEST OF THE BEST

At the beginning of 2024, Thriston Lawrence said: “Being the best in South Africa is a big thing for me.” He went on to add that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of Ernie Els and Louis Oosthuizen, who were the best in their country in their era.

The 28-year-old will most likely finish the year as the top-ranked South African on the World Ranking, and if he continues on his current trajectory, he will realise his goal of being the best in his era. Lawrence may not have won any tournaments overseas in 2024, but he came oh-so-close with four tie-second finishes, plus he earned his PGA Tour card.

He has waved the SA flag with aplomb and entertained his home-country fans with some supreme golf, leaving us with plenty to look forward to in the new year.

Once again, The Golf Mag had an abundance of young, up-and-coming golfers to choose from to feature. The Northern Cape’s Lyle Pedro is this month’s Rising Star. It’s not just his golf that makes him stand out, though. This youngster is committed to playing his part in making sure the kids from his home town of Kathu are also able to play game he loves so much. They regard him as their hero and he is fast becoming one of mine too.

Two other players who have earned the admiration of many are GolfRSA National Squad Watch member, Bobbi Brown, and visually impaired golfer, Leon Strydom.

This year, Brown won the Ackerman Championship, Boland Women’s Open and Southern Cape Open, and only finished outside the top 10 twice in 12 starts. This is incredible enough, but when you learn about how she has been plagued by injuries, all while keeping a smile on her face, you cannot help but respect her even more.

Strydom adds new meaning to the term “overcoming obstacles” as he has formed a formidable team with his wife Lizell, who acts as his guide. He continues to thrive in tournaments, culminating in victory at the SA Disabled Golf Association’s recently formed All Abilities Golf Tour in September. His story and journey are truly inspirational.

This is all just a taste of what we have in store for you this month. We also take you on a trip to the magnificent Wild Coast Sun Country Club and its breathtaking surrounds. Plus, Grant Hepburn shares his latest tips with you and we try to alleviate some of the stress of Christmas shopping with a variety of gift ideas.

The holiday season will soon be in full swing, and we at The Golf Mag wish you a relaxing, blessed time spent with family and friends… and on the golf course, naturally!
